CHAPTER NINE - SILVER HAVEN

They flew off from Bartertown with the entire town watching. Silverhorn’s ability to grow larger had stunned everyone and brought a renewed string of offers for work.

Silverhorn and Braveheart each took a pile of cargo and they flew off towards the next mountain. Just as they came level with it, Silverhorn landed and signalled Braveheart to do so as well.

We will watch from here, Silverhorn said, not at all breathless from the huge weight he was carrying. We must wait for the sun to reach the horizon.

Logan kept hold of the little red dragon, feeding it fruit to keep it calm. There was no way he was going to let it fly around now that he knew there were so many red dragons nearby. The white flour was rubbing off on Logan’s tunic and Djana handed him her sash to wipe the little dragonet clean. He cleaned off the flour and shoved the sash in his pocket.

The sun was placed exactly between two of the large mountains in the distance. Finally, Silverhorn nodded and extended his wings.

We must go now, and quickly, he said.

Logan was still holding the little dragonet and it seemed quite content to stay in his arms. Logan couldn’t quite believe he was sitting on the back of a dragon, holding another one, and heading for the home of thousands more. Just a few weeks ago the sight of just one dragon had been more than enough.

I do not see a village, Braveheart said. Which way are we going?

Towards the sun, Silverhorn replied.

They flew off, keeping low over the trees and then low to the ground when the trees thinned and stopped. The ground was sandy and heat rose from it even though the sun was no longer on it. Up ahead, the ground began to change colour and Logan squinted into the sun to see what they were approaching. Instead of the golden sand, the ground was a sparkly grey colour, which glinted in the last rays of the light from the sun.

‘What is that?’ Myles asked as Braveheart suddenly refused to go any further.

The blue dragon back-winged and glared at Silverhorn. It is silver.

Yes, it’s powdered silver. The people of the valley of Silver Haven have put it there to keep the red dragons away from the village, Silverhorn confirmed.

It will keep us away as well, Braveheart muttered. If we touch it ... we will turn to stone.

We won’t be touching it, Silverhorn assured the blue dragon. The village isn’t far.

Braveheart stared at the silver sand and then flew a little higher so that the downbeat of his wings didn’t disturb any of the silver.

They flew on, and Logan realised they were heading for a small cluster of hills on the floor of the valley. He was amazed at how far the silver sand was spread. It took nearly five minutes to reach the hills. They were mostly barren and sandy with just a few trees struggling to survive at the top.
